Newmarket Soapbox Derby & British National Final are Cancelled
With much sadness and regret, Newmarket Town Council has agreed that the 2020 Newmarket Soapbox Derby and British National Final must be cancelled. We have also ruled out the possibility of staging the Soapbox at a future date this year. Our biggest concern has been the health and safety of all those involved in the staging and running of the Soapbox, as well as wider public health and the Town Council’s role in society’s efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, supporters, entrants and staff for their support of this popular event which was set to be bigger and better than last year. Whilst it is hugely disappointing to have to make this decision, we will ensure a spectacular event for 2021. People who have already purchased tickets are advised to contact the Town Council to arrange a refund.
Cllr James Lay, Deputy Mayor said:
“We appreciate that the cancellation of the Soapbox Derby will come as a huge disappointment to many involved, especially after last year’s success. However, no matter how passionate we are about racing, we are also mindful that there are now more significant issues at stake than the staging of the Soapbox event.
We encourage all to adhere to Government requirements on social distancing and hope that by 2021 we can safely enjoy and share the thrill of a Soapbox race’’
Thank you for your understanding during these unprecedented times. We look forward to bringing you the Soapbox event in 2021!
